beijing- july 16, 2016, part 2
so to continue on my trip to 798 on the above date.
i can’t define chinese art, or the chinese art scene to you. like every major art centre, it constantly shifts and there is a really wide expanse of work. i can only describe chinese art as diverse, but also greatly representative of arts various styles and forms. 798 hosts them all.
i can also tell you that chinese artists for the most part are highly trained, highly skilled, using art as a brush, a love potion, as well as a rapier. some ‘paint’ for art’s sake, but much of the work is social commentary. as youths, the chinese are pushed to excel. a child in high school does not only book learning, but is likely to be enrolled in quite a variety of expressions: literature, calligraphy, painting, music, piano, violin, dance.
like my youth, many do not continue is this learning, but in my youth i had the option to say ‘no’… a decision i kinda regret now. traditionally, chinese children do not say no to their parents wishes. that has shifted a little because of the former one child policy. but i digress.
this gallery deserves a blog of its own.
the first works by tianjin artist, fu shuai, are not original by any means… but are well done. it is about optical illusions, like those you will see in books on, well, optical illusions. i am minded to invoke escher here, but the more intelligent of you would slap me down like a worrisome mosquito, and henceforth refer to me as a country bumpkin… which i would not challenge. you though, don’t have to tell everyone lol.
with several of these, what i saw with my eyes reflected one thing, but as soon as i brought the camera up, it was like looking into a different dimension, constantly shape-shifting.
i believe this is a tianjin artist. i must look him up one day.
The following works by different artists, were in the same gallery.
This is a motor-driven mobile.
this process cycles every 40 or so seconds, dropping from a 20 ft ceiling, a kind of amorphic blob, shifting shape as it gently floats down to the floor, hits a mat and pfffft. disappears.
when i grow rich, i’m gonna get a roomful of this. better than goldfish.
here endeth part 2. come back again.
